How to Confirm Pregnancy

There are various specific and general signs and symptoms that can indicate pregnancy:

  • Missed period
  • Morning sickness, nausea, and vomiting
  • Frequent urination
  • Breast tenderness
  • Fatigue or tiredness
  • Changes in appetite, food cravings, or unusual taste in the mouth

Confirmatory Tests

  1. Urine hCG test
  2. Blood hCG test
  3. Ultrasound

When to Consult a Doctor: If it's your first pregnancy and you're young, have no other medical conditions or diseases, you can wait for 2 weeks before consulting a doctor. However, if you are older, have been trying to conceive for more than a year, have any medical issues or chronic diseases, have had complications in previous pregnancies, or are experiencing severe pregnancy symptoms, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Diagnostic Methods

Testing & Scans

Learn about the different methods for confirming your pregnancy safely and accurately.

Blood hCG Test

The serum Beta hCG test is the most precise method. It can be detected in the blood of 5% of patients 8 days after conception, and in over 98% by 11 days.

Home Testing

Use a urine kit 1-2 days after a missed period. Use first morning urine, avoid excessive fluids, and ensure the kit is not expired.

Kit Results

A positive result indicates pregnancy. False positives are rare. If negative, you might still be pregnant; retest in a week or consider a blood test.

Ultrasound Scans

Typically done between 6-7 weeks to determine the location and number of sacs, fetal heartbeat, and confirm pregnancy dating.

Prenatal Counseling

Involves visiting a doctor before conceiving. Includes medical check-ups, tests to identify diseases, and vitamin supplements.
