Understanding Common Pregnancy Problems

Pregnancy is a time of incredible change and excitement, but it can also bring a range of common physical issues. Pregnancy often involves several physiological changes that can lead to discomfort.

Normal Symptoms

Here are some common issues that are generally considered normal:

  • Nausea and Vomiting: Often termed "morning sickness," this can occur at any time of the day.
  • Backache: A frequent complaint due to the body's adjustment to the growing baby.
  • Constipation: Changes in hormones and dietary habits can affect bowel movements.
  • Leg Cramps: Common, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy.
  • Acidity and Heartburn: Caused by hormonal changes and pressure from the growing uterus.
  • Varicose Veins & Piles: Swollen veins usually seen in the legs or rectal area.
  • Ankle Oedema: Fluid retention can cause swelling in the feet or ankles.

Managing Nausea & Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are highly prevalent during pregnancy. Here is what you need to know to manage them effectively.

Timeline

Nausea and vomiting typically begin before the 9th week of pregnancy and usually subside by the 14th week, though for some women it persists longer.

Causes

The exact causes are not entirely known, but hormonal changes, thyroid or gallbladder issues, family history, or carrying twins are thought to play a role.

Hyperemesis

Hyperemesis Gravidarum refers to a severe form of nausea and vomiting affecting up to 3% of pregnancies. It may lead to dehydration and requires immediate medical attention.

Lifestyle Strategies

Eat dry toast or crackers before getting out of bed. Eat frequent small meals, stick to bland foods (BRATT diet), and use ginger candies or tea to settle your stomach.

Dental Care

Frequent vomiting can erode tooth enamel due to stomach acid. Rinsing your mouth with a solution of baking soda and water can help neutralize acids and protect teeth.

Medications

If dietary adjustments do not alleviate symptoms, your doctor may recommend Vitamin B6, Doxylamine, or prescription anti-emetics safe for pregnancy.
